One of the most beloved Tribal-style performers and teachers ever for her unique aesthetic. Often emulated for her sinuous, slow, controlled movements. She’s considered an innovator, but as anyone who has ever met her knows, she always gives credit to the dancers and teachers who inspired her. She never takes credit for other dancers’ genius. Her roots and current influences include Jamila & Suhaila Salimpour, Fifi Abdou, Carolena Nericcio (ATS), Jill Parker, and Mardi Love.
Rachel was a cabaret-style dancer for many years. Rachel is always aspiring to expand her knowledge in belly dance and also other areas of study that overlap and enhance belly dance. For example, yoga, pilates, improvisational techniques, and dance history. Rachel has a degree in Dance Ethnology. She is the founder of The Indigo Belly Dance Company, which toured for 5 years with the Bellydance Superstars. She is also a certified teacher of Viniyoga, which helps keep one healthy to be able to belly dance. Our lower backs can take a beating in life, especially if we sit too much in front of electronic devices.
She is now immersed in her Datura Style; in her own studio in Portland, with online courses, and by teaching workshops and performing at festivals. She emphasizes dance vocabulary with lots of improvisation and musical interpretation. She believes with study and practice anyone can become a wonderful dancer with their own unique style.
I have had the pleasure of attending several of Rachel’s retreats in Costa Rica over the years. What magnificent experiences! If you ever have a chance to go to one of her retreats or workshops, please do. She is a fantastic teacher as well as having a warm presence and a sense of humor.
