When choosing which belly dance instructional DVD to buy, you need to consider your current level of experience with belly dance.  Trying to learn from a DVD that is beyond your skill level can be frustrating or challenge.  Buying a DVD that is beneath your skill level can be a waste of your money.  However, it might be a good source of drill material.  Every belly dancer always practices the basics forever.

Beginner

A beginner belly dancer is someone who is new to the art form and has little to no prior experience in belly dancing. This could include someone who has never taken a belly dance class before, or someone who has taken a few classes but is still in the early stages of learning the basic movements and techniques. Beginner belly dancers typically start with foundational movements such as hip drops, shimmies, and figure-eight movements, and gradually progress to more complex movements and combinations as they gain experience and skill.

A person who has previous dance training should be able to progress through the beginner level of belly dance quickly.

Intermediate

An intermediate level belly dancer is someone who has developed a solid foundation of belly dance technique and is ready to expand their knowledge and skills. Intermediate dancers have typically taken classes for several months or years and are comfortable with basic movements such as shimmies, hip drops, and figure eights. They have also developed good posture, balance, and control over their movements.

Intermediate belly dancers are able to execute more complex movements and combinations with greater precision and fluidity. They are also able to layer movements and play with different rhythms and styles. In addition, intermediate belly dancers may begin to explore improvisation and choreography, and may start performing publicly or competing in belly dance events.

Advanced

An advanced level belly dancer is someone who has spent many years dedicated to the study and practice of belly dance. They have a deep understanding of the foundational movements and are able to execute them with fluidity, precision, and control. They have also developed a unique style and artistic expression, and are able to interpret music and create their own choreography.

Advanced belly dancers have a wide repertoire of movements and combinations, and are able to seamlessly blend traditional and modern styles. They are also able to perform complex layering and isolation techniques, and can use props such as swords, veils, and zills (finger cymbals) with mastery.

In addition, advanced belly dancers are able to connect with their audience on an emotional level, and are able to use their dance to tell a story or convey a message. They may also be instructors or mentors to other belly dancers, and may be sought after for performances, workshops, and collaborations.
